He ended the call, slammed his hand against the doorframe, and turned around to face us. His polished composure was entirely gone. His hair was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, and his face pale.
“Satisfied?” he demanded, pointing an accusing finger at Diane and me. “Are you happy now? Vanguard just suspended me pending an investigation! They froze my corporate cards!”
“You did that to yourself, Ryan,” I said calmly from the table. “You chose to steal from your company just like you chose to steal from our baby.”
“I was doing it for us!” Ryan screamed, his voice cracking. “I was trying to build something massive! Something beyond this miserable suburban life! You never understood my ambition, Hannah! You were content with your pathetic little design job and your quiet little life!”
“Ambition?” Diane stood up, walking toward him with slow, deliberate steps. “Is that what you call lying, stealing, and cheating? You are a pathetic, weak boy who hides behind slick suits and sweet talk. You thought you could destroy this girl and take her child? Not while I am breathing.”
Ryan looked at his mother, a sudden flicker of panic crossing his eyes. “Mom… you can’t let Arthur execute that trust freeze. If Vanguard files charges, I need that money for bail and legal defense!”
“Then you had better find a very good public defender,” Diane said coldly. “Because not one dime of Richard’s money will ever go to protect you from the consequences of your own evil.”
Ryan stared at her, realization finally dawning on him that his mother was completely lost to him. He turned his eyes toward me, looking for any trace of the forgiving, gentle wife he had manipulated for six years.
“Hannah… please,” he whispered, stepping toward me. “Think of Ella. She needs a father who isn’t in prison. We can fix this. I’ll go to therapy. I’ll break everything off with Kayla—I don’t even care about her! It was just a distraction!”
I looked at him—really looked at him—and felt absolutely nothing except a profound sense of relief that the truth had finally surfaced before my daughter was born.
“Get out of my house, Ryan,” I said softly. “Before I call the police and report the forged documents myself.”
Ryan glared at us both, grabbed his bag, and stormed out, slamming the door so hard the framed ultrasound photo on the entryway table rattled against the wall.
Chapter 8 – The Confrontation with Kayla
Thirty minutes after Ryan fled the house, my phone chimed again. It was a text message from an unknown number. When I opened it, I realized it was Kayla, texting from a burner application.
He came to my apartment, Hannah. He’s out of his mind. He’s screaming at me through the door. I’m scared.
I stared at the screen. Part of me wanted to ignore it, to let them destroy each other in the wreckage of their own making. But another part—the part that remembered eleven years of late-night conversations, shared dorm rooms, and holding each other through life’s hardships—couldn’t let a woman be endangered, even one who had betrayed me so deeply.
“Diane,” I said, showing her the message. “Ryan went to Kayla’s place. He’s escalating.”
Diane took a deep breath and grabbed her purse. “We are calling the police to report a domestic disturbance at her address. And then we are going down there with Arthur. We need to make sure this ends tonight.”
We arrived at Kayla’s downtown apartment building twenty minutes later, just as two police cruisers pulled up to the curb with their lights flashing quietly. The officers rushed inside, with Diane, Arthur, and me following closely behind.
When we reached the third-floor hallway, the sound of Ryan screaming echoes off the carpeted walls. He was pounding on Kayla’s door with both fists, his voice ragged.
“Open the door, Kayla! You ruined everything! You sent those screenshots to Hannah! You gave them the paper trail!” Ryan yelled, his fist striking the wood with alarming force.
“Ryan Mitchell!” an officer commanded, drawing his taser. “Step away from the door and put your hands behind your back immediately!”
Ryan spun around, wild-eyed and breathless. When he saw me standing behind the officers, flanked by his mother and a corporate lawyer, something inside him finally broke completely. He didn’t fight. He let out a strange, breathless laugh, sank to his knees on the hallway carpet, and put his hands behind his head.
“You brought the police, Hannah?” Ryan laughed bitterly as the officer clicked handcuffs around his wrists. “For your own husband?”
“You stopped being my husband the second you put a price tag on our daughter’s future,” I said, standing tall despite the exhaustion pulling at my body.
The apartment door unlocked slowly, and Kayla stepped out, pale, shaking, and clutching a sweater around her chest. She looked at Ryan in cuffs, then at me.
“Hannah…” Kayla stammered, tears streaming down her face. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t know he was capable of this…”
“I didn’t bring the police for you, Kayla,” I said, my voice ice cold. “I brought them for him. But as far as you and I are concerned, we are done. Never speak to me, never come near my daughter, and never look for forgiveness from me.”
Kayla flinched as if struck, nodding slowly as she sank against her doorway.
As the police led Ryan down the hallway toward the elevator, he looked back over his shoulder at Diane. “Mom! You’re really going to let them take me?”
Diane stood beside me, wrapping her arm gently around my waist to support me. She didn’t look at him as she spoke her final words to her son:
“You reaped what you sowed, Ryan. May God have mercy on you, because the law won’t.”
Chapter 9 – Labor under the Storm
The intense stress of the past thirty-six hours finally caught up with my physical body at midnight.
