All’inizio, alcuni eventi erano autentici.
“Poi hai aiutato a costruirlo.”
“L’ho fatto.”
Diane aveva rubato a Northstar.
I refused Grant when he suggested that a quiet settlement might protect everyone from embarrassment.
“Everyone has already been protected except me,” I told him.
He did not ask again.
Northstar’s outside review separated genuine expenses from unsupported ones and established the losses without counting the same money twice.
The company pursued repayment through the appropriate channels.
The process took months.
There were no instant convictions, no overnight recovery, and no single document that repaired the business.
There were statements, interviews, deadlines, and invoices checked one by one.
Diane eventually reached an agreement through her lawyer involving repayment and the allegations against her.
Paige faced consequences for her own conduct, including the assault and the false approvals.
Their attorneys advised them separately.
By autumn, neither had any role at Northstar.
Diane’s townhouse was sold.
Some money came back.
Some recovery took longer.
Grant remained at the company under a revised structure with independent oversight.
He lost the authority to approve expenses involving relatives or connected businesses without review.
He also lost something harder to restore.
People who had once trusted his signature now checked it.
He hated that.
He needed to hate it.
One evening in June, he came to my house with flowers.
I let him in, but I did not take the flowers from his hand immediately.
“You can put them on the counter,” I said.
He looked around the kitchen.
Russell’s chair was still there.
For three years, Grant had avoided sitting in it.
That evening, he sat across from it.
“I moved out,” he said.
I nodded.
“I filed for separation.”
“I’m sorry your marriage reached this point.”
He swallowed.
“Are you?”
The question was raw.
“Yes,” I said.
“I never wanted this for you.”
Abbassò lo sguardo.
“I thought keeping Paige happy would keep our life peaceful.”
“And when she hurt someone else?”
“I told myself I would address it later.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
The answer came without explanation.
I waited.
“I keep thinking about you standing there wet,” he said.
“And me telling you to go home.”
My hands tightened around my cup.
“I think about it too.”
He began crying.
I let him.
“I don’t know how to fix that.”
“You can’t fix the afternoon.”
He looked up.
“You can decide what kind of man stands in front of me now.”
For the first time, he apologized without mentioning stress, Diane, the business, or what Paige might lose.
“I saw what happened.
I chose the easier person to disappoint.
I chose you because I believed you would keep loving me anyway.”
I looked at him for a long time.
“I did keep loving you,” I said.
“But you confused that with permission.”
He nodded, crying harder.
I did not hold him.
Not that evening.
I could love him and still need my own arms around myself.
He began counseling.
He stopped expecting me to serve as his adviser, lender, and emotional emergency room.
Our first few visits were brief.
Sometimes they were awkward.
We spoke about his work, the garden, and books I had read.
If he began explaining Paige’s behavior, I stopped him.
“That belongs in another conversation.”
Gradually, he learned that visiting me did not require a crisis.
Gradually, I learned that I could end a visit without ending motherhood.
Paige wrote me a letter in August.
Her attorney sent it after checking that I was willing to receive it.
I read it alone.
She described what she had done without calling it a misunderstanding.
