They were no longer billionaires. They no longer attended galas, and their names faded from the society pages. But they were rich in a way Margaret could never comprehend.
On a bright, breezy afternoon in late September, Olivia was on her knees in the garden, her hands buried in the rich, dark soil as she planted tulip bulbs for the coming spring. The sun warmed her back, and the salty ocean breeze carried the scent of pine and blooming lavender.
The screen door of the porch creaked open, and Julian stepped out, carrying two mugs of steaming coffee. He walked down the stone path, his boots crunching on the gravel, and knelt beside her in the dirt. He handed her a mug and leaned over to kiss her temple, lingering just a second longer than usual.
Olivia took a sip of the coffee, smiling at him. “You’re home early.”
“I closed the deal with the solar company,” Julian said, his eyes bright with a quiet, grounded pride. “And then I realized there was absolutely nowhere else I wanted to be.”
He looked down at the freshly turned soil, then up at the rambling, imperfect farmhouse they had turned into a home. He reached out and gently brushed a smudge of dirt from Olivia’s cheek—the exact same spot where, years ago, he had wiped away tears in a fleeing car. Now, there were no tears. There was only the radiant, unshakeable calm of a woman who had fought for her peace and won.
He rested his forehead against hers in the afternoon sun. They had lost an empire of lies, only to build a kingdom of truth right in the dirt.
What aspect of their new community or personal projects would you like to see them navigate next?

Chapter 7 – The Auction of Pride
By 3:00 AM, the Sterling mansion was surrounded.
Flashing red and blue lights painted the limestone facade of the mansion in surreal, rhythmic strokes. Three news helicopters circled overhead, their searchlights cutting through the thick Manhattan fog, illuminating the manicured hedges and the long, gated driveway. Outside the iron gates, over a hundred reporters and paparazzi had gathered, their camera lenses pressed against the bars like the teeth of hungry wolves.

Inside the grand library, Olivia sat in the large leather wingback chair that had once belonged to Charles Sterling. A female paramedic had just finished cleaning the cuts on her palms, wrapping them in sterile white bandages, and applying a cold compress to her bruised cheek.
Ethan stood by the towering bay windows, his tuxedo jacket discarded, his shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He watched the media circus outside through the parted velvet curtains.
A knock sounded at the library door.
Jonathan Croft stepped inside, his briefcase looking heavier than ever. Behind him walked three men and two women—the core executive board members of Sterling Enterprises. They looked terrified. They were the ones who had enabled Margaret for decades, turning a blind eye to her creative accounting and ruthless purges.
“Mrs. Vance-Sterling,” Croft began, his voice hesitant, deferential. “The board members requested an immediate audience. The overseas markets in Tokyo and London have already opened. Sterling Enterprises stock has dropped twenty-two percent in the last three hours. If we don’t issue a statement before the New York Stock Exchange opens at 9:30 AM, the company could face complete catastrophic liquidation.”
Olivia looked at the board members.
Among them was Thomas Vance-Croft, Ethan’s second cousin, a man who had laughed at Margaret’s jokes during dinner and had once publicly referred to Olivia as “Ethan’s little charity project.” Thomas looked pale, his hands trembling as he adjusted his silk tie.
“Olivia,” Thomas stammered, stepping forward with an oily, nervous smile. “We… the board… we want to express our deepest horrors at what transpired tonight. Margaret’s actions were… monstrous. None of us had any idea. We are fully prepared to support you and Ethan through this transition. If we form an executive committee tonight—”
“Stop talking, Thomas,” Olivia said quietly.
Her voice wasn’t loud, but the entire room fell dead silent.
Olivia stood up from Charles’s chair. She walked over to the mahogany desk, where several thick bound documents lay open under the green banker’s lamp.
“You knew Margaret was transferring funds through shell corporations in the Caymans, Thomas,” Olivia said, her eyes pinning him to the spot. “You signed off on the fictitious maritime depreciation reports for eight consecutive quarters. You took a four-million-dollar bonus last Christmas that was paid directly out of the Vance Trust’s escrow dividends.”
Thomas’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. His face turned a sickly shade of green.
“You aren’t here because you’re horrified by what Margaret did,” Olivia continued, her voice sharp as a diamond blade. “You’re here because you’re terrified that when the federal forensic accountants finish combing through the files in the basement vault, your name is going to be on the next set of indictments.”
She looked at the other four board members. Each of them averted their eyes, unable to withstand the scrutiny of the woman they had treated as an invisible ghost for three years.
“Croft,” Olivia said.
“Yes, ma’am?”
“Call an emergency board meeting for 8:00 AM tomorrow,” Olivia commanded. “As the holder of fifty-two percent of the voting shares, I am dissolving the current board of directors effective immediately. Every single executive position will be audited by an independent firm appointed by the Department of Justice. Anyone who has accepted illegal bonuses from Margaret’s private accounts will either surrender their stock options and resign without severance, or face federal prosecution alongside her.”
One of the female directors, a veteran Wall Street shark named Catherine Hayes, took a sharp breath. “You can’t just gut the entire leadership of a Fortune 500 company four hours before the bell! The market will panic! You’ll wipe out billions of dollars in enterprise value!”
