Quasi ridevo.

Ora voleva privacy.

“No.”

Le labbra si schiusero.

“Non sai in cosa ti stai cacciando.”

“Allora dimmi.”

Qualunque cosa Isaiah Whitmore avesse lasciato a mio nome, Marcus chiaramente ne sapeva qualcosa.

The Night Two Black SUVs Arrived at My Husband’s Family Dinner
Chapter 4: The Secret Waiting at the Estate

The message stayed on my phone long after the SUVs left the mansion behind.

He has been trying to reach you since this morning. He believes his mother has finally discovered what his grandfather left in your name.

I read it again.

Then a third time.

Outside the window, Georgia’s late-afternoon sunlight spilled across pine trees, long driveways, and stretches of road bordered by expensive homes hidden behind iron gates. The driver moved smoothly through traffic, while the second black Escalade followed at a measured distance.

Amara had finally stopped crying.

She sat curled against me, clutching her soft ball in one hand. Every few minutes, she touched the place on her cheek where Evelyn had struck her, as though she were trying to understand why it still felt strange.

I wanted to ask whether it hurt.

I wanted to promise that nobody would ever hurt her again.

But I knew better than to make a promise no parent could guarantee.

So I kissed the top of her head and whispered, “You can always tell me when something scares you, sweetheart. Even if it’s someone in our family.””

She looked up at me.

“Even Grandma?””

“Especially if it’s Grandma.””

Amara considered that for a moment, then rested her head against my shoulder.

My phone vibrated again.

This time, the message came from a number I recognized.

Isaiah Whitmore.

Chloe, I understand that you’re on your way. I owe you an explanation. Please bring Amara. The people accompanying you will make sure you arrive safely.

I stared at the screen.

For years, Isaiah had been the quiet patriarch of the Whitmore family, a man whose influence extended far beyond the mansion where Marcus had grown up. He rarely appeared in photographs, avoided family arguments, and seemed content to let Evelyn manage the social side of the family while he concentrated on business.

At our wedding, he had given me a simple gold bracelet.

Evelyn had called it an inexpensive gesture from an old man who didn’t understand modern jewelry.

Months later, Isaiah had asked me to lunch without Marcus or Evelyn present. He wanted to know about my work, my childhood, and the things I hoped to accomplish for Amara.

Before we parted, he had said something I had never forgotten.

“Never let anyone convince you that being welcomed into a family means surrendering your right to stand on your own feet.””

At the time, I thought he was offering general advice.

Now I wondered whether he had been warning me about his own family.

I typed a reply.

What did Marcus know about the estate?

Three dots appeared, disappeared, then returned.

Finally, Isaiah answered.

More than he has told you. But I would rather explain everything in person.

I put the phone away.
