Marcus, the giant, the protector, the man who never flinched in the face of violence or intimidation, pressed his massive hand against his mouth. His shoulders shook slightly as he let out a thick, emotional breath. He walked up the steps of the deck and pulled Maya into a crushing hug, burying his face in her dark hair.

“I am so proud of you, Maya,” he whispered, his deep voice cracking. “So damn proud.”

I stood up and wrapped my arms around them both, pressing my cheek against Marcus’s broad back.

David Sterling had completely faded into the obscure background of the world. The last I had heard, years ago, he had violated his parole and was sent back to finish his sentence. His family’s wealth had eventually unraveled under the weight of their own arrogance and endless legal fees. They were a cautionary tale, a shadow that could no longer reach us.

Later that evening, after the burgers were eaten and the kitchen was cleaned, I walked into the living room.

Draped carefully over the back of my favorite reading armchair was a faded, pale green fleece blanket with tiny white clouds. It had survived countless washes, endless forts built in the living room, and a decade of late-night movies. It was worn thin at the edges, but it remained the most valuable thing I had ever owned.

Marcus came up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling my back flush against his chest. He rested his chin on the top of my head, looking at the blanket with me.

“You know,” he rumbled softly in the quiet house, “when I bought that thing, I just wanted to make sure the baby had something soft.”

I smiled, turning in his arms to look up at the rugged, beautiful face of my husband.

“You gave us a lot more than something soft, Marcus,” I whispered, reaching up to trace the line of his jaw. “You gave us a life.”

He leaned down and kissed me, a slow, deep promise that tasted like peace. We had walked through the fire, we had faced down the monsters, and we had built a kingdom out of the ashes. And as I held onto the giant who had saved my world, I knew with absolute certainty that our story was finally, perfectly complete.
