“I’ve spent years trying not to upset anyone.”
“And now?”
“Now I’m more concerned about what happens if I keep surrendering.”
Rosa joined us moments later.
She confirmed that no access changes or renovation permissions had been approved.
Patrick reviewed the document Caleb signed.
Then he opened his briefcase.
Inside were copies of my property records, written instructions concerning unauthorized modifications, and documents related to my estate planning.
Seeing the paperwork made everything suddenly real.
Patrick noticed my expression.
“You still have choices, Barbara.”
“I know.”
“Nothing has to happen until you’re ready.”
I looked toward the elevator.
“I’m ready to hear the truth.”
We went upstairs together.
When I opened my front door, I found Harper sitting at my dining table with Richard’s drawings spread across its surface.
Catherine was in the kitchen preparing coffee.
Caleb stood near the balcony, looking toward the ocean.
Richard had placed a measuring tape against the wall dividing my living room from the kitchen.
The sight made my stomach twist.
Harper looked up.
“Barbara, what are you doing here so early?”
I stepped inside.
“I came home.”
Her gaze shifted toward Patrick.
“Who is this?”
“My attorney.”
The room became silent.
Richard slowly lowered the measuring tape.
Harper laughed nervously.
“An attorney for what?”
Patrick introduced himself.
“I’m here to clarify ownership and address several requests submitted concerning this property.”
Harper’s smile disappeared.
“That’s completely unnecessary.”
“Then this should be a brief conversation,” Patrick replied.
Rosa explained that the building could not accept instructions from anyone other than the owner or a properly authorized representative.
Richard frowned.
“Caleb is Barbara’s son.”
Patrick nodded.
“That doesn’t make him the property owner.”
Harper crossed her arms.
“Obviously, but eventually the condo will be his.”
I felt everyone turn toward me.
Patrick remained calm.
“An expectation of inheritance doesn’t create present ownership rights.”
Catherine set down her coffee cup.
“Harper, you told us Caleb was already handling the property.”
“He is,” Harper insisted.
“Not anymore,” I replied.
She stared at me.
“What does that mean?”
“It means nobody here has permission to change my home or represent me in property matters.”
Richard shuffled his plans.
“We were only attempting to improve its value.”
“You were planning to remove my bedroom without asking me.”
“That wasn’t the intention.”
I pointed toward the printed drawings.
“Then whose bedroom does that say it will become?”
He didn’t answer.
Harper turned toward Caleb.
“Tell your mother this is ridiculous.”
My son looked at Patrick, then at me.
“Mom, we weren’t trying to steal anything.”
“Then explain the document you signed.”
He shifted uncomfortably.
“I thought it would make things easier.”
“For whom?”
“For everyone.”
I shook my head.
“Everyone except me.”
Harper interrupted.
“Barbara, you’re acting as though we’ve committed some terrible offense over a misunderstanding.”
I turned to her.
“You asked me to leave, planned changes to my bedroom, and submitted paperwork suggesting I wouldn’t return.”
She opened her mouth, but I continued.
“There’s nothing accidental about doing those things together.”
Catherine looked sharply at her daughter.
“Harper, did you actually tell the building Barbara was leaving permanently?”
“We were discussing what made practical sense.”
I looked at Caleb.
“Did you know about this before yesterday?”
His face drained of color.
“Mom, please.”
“Answer me.”
Harper reached for his arm.
“Caleb, don’t let her intimidate you.”
He pulled his arm away.
For one hopeful second, I thought he was finally going to stand up for me.
Instead, he looked directly into my eyes and admitted something far worse.
“I told Harper and her parents that you’d probably sign the condo over to us this summer.”
The room went completely still.
I could barely find my voice.
“Caleb, why would you tell them that?”
He swallowed.
“Because I thought if we made the place nice enough, you’d realize it was better for us to have it.”
I stared at my only son.
He hadn’t misunderstood my wishes.
He had been making plans to replace them with his own.
The Condo They Tried To Take From Me 022
PART 4: I Made a Decision My Son Never Thought I Would Dare to Make
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
Caleb stood before me, looking ashamed, while the truth of his admission settled over the room.
He hadn’t simply failed to defend me from Harper.
He had encouraged her to believe my condo was already becoming theirs.
I remembered the years I spent teaching him to respect other people’s belongings.
I remembered insisting that he return a toy he had taken from another child when he was seven.
And now he stood inside my home explaining why he deserved to take control of something I had worked thirty years to purchase.
“Did I ever promise to sign this condo over to you?” I asked.
“No,” he admitted.
“Did I ever tell you I was finished using it?”
“No.”
“Then why did you tell Harper’s parents they could make plans for it?”
He rubbed his hands together.
“Because you already have your regular home, Mom.”
I blinked.
“And that means I don’t deserve this one?”
“That’s not what I’m saying.”
“Then explain it.”
He struggled to find the words.
“Harper and I are trying to build a future.”
“And I’m standing in the way?”
He lowered his head.
Harper stepped forward.
“Barbara, nobody is suggesting you don’t deserve anything.”
I looked at her.
“You literally suggested I should sleep in a cheap motel while your parents occupied my bedroom.”
Her cheeks reddened.
“I was trying to accommodate everyone.”
“No, Harper, you were accommodating everyone except the owner.”
Richard cleared his throat.
“Perhaps we should focus on the actual property issue rather than personal feelings.”
I turned toward him.
“My personal feelings became a property issue when your family started planning to demolish my bedroom.”
He looked down at the drawings.
Catherine slowly approached the table.
“Richard, put those plans away.”
Her husband frowned.
“Catherine—”
“Put them away.”
