The room went completely silent.
Luca looked toward Rebecca.
She was already searching.
The agency was registered to a subsidiary of Bell Investment Group.
Sophia’s family.
Emma felt her stomach drop.
“They hired me?”
Rebecca nodded.
Luca looked at the wall.
The entire situation had been arranged.
Emma hadn’t accidentally become a maid inside his home.
She had been placed there.
Close to confidential documents.
Close to Bianca.
Close to someone who could accuse her of theft.
But then Rebecca discovered another detail.
Emma’s employment application had been manually approved.
Not by Bianca.
Not by Sophia.
By someone inside Luca’s private office.
Luca stared at the authorization.
His face changed.
The name belonged to his long-serving estate administrator.
Samuel Whitmore.
Emma froze.
“Samuel?”
The elderly man who had always brought Noah birthday gifts.
The man who knew her grandmother.
The man who helped her get the job.
Luca stood slowly.
“Find Samuel.”
Rebecca hesitated.
“There’s something you should know first.”
She turned the screen.
Samuel Whitmore wasn’t merely Luca’s estate administrator.
He was Edward Whitmore’s younger brother.
Emma’s great-uncle.
The mafia boss came home early and found his fiancée doing something to his maid that ended their engagement that night. Luca Moretti knew something was wrong before he even opened the door. The hallway outside the west sitting room was silent.
Chapter 8 – THE UNCLE WHO HID HIS NAME
Samuel Whitmore had worked for Luca Moretti for eleven years.
He managed the estate’s staff, supervised maintenance, and handled the countless details that kept an enormous household running smoothly.
He was sixty-eight.
Quiet.
Polite.
And seemingly uninterested in anyone’s personal life.
Now Luca knew he’d been hiding a family connection to Emma Carter.
When Samuel entered the study, Emma stood immediately.
“Samuel?”
His expression changed.
“Oh, sweetheart.”
Her eyes filled.
“You’re my uncle?”
Samuel closed his eyes.
“Great-uncle.”
Emma stared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
He looked toward Luca.
“Because I was afraid.”
Luca folded his arms.
“Of whom?”
“Martin Bell.”
The room went silent.
Samuel sat down heavily.
He explained that after Edward Whitmore died, Martin Bell assumed control over several family trusts.
Margaret Whitmore, Emma’s mother, had challenged the arrangements.
She believed Martin was moving assets without authorization.
Then Margaret died unexpectedly.
Samuel suspected financial wrongdoing but lacked the evidence to prove it.
“I tried to get access to the trust records,” he said. “Martin threatened legal action.”
Emma looked devastated.
“So you just let us struggle?”
Samuel’s eyes filled.
“No.”
He reached into his jacket.
A small folder appeared.
Inside were receipts.
School fees.
Medical bills.
Rent payments.
All paid anonymously.
Emma recognized several.
The scholarship that covered Noah’s summer program.
The emergency payment that saved their apartment.
The anonymous donation to their grandmother’s church.
“You did those?”
Samuel nodded.
“I helped where I could.”
Emma began crying.
“Why didn’t you tell us?”
“Because Martin was monitoring the family. I believed direct contact could make things worse.”
Luca studied him.
“Then why bring Emma into my house?”
Samuel looked down.
“Because I discovered Martin was planning to use the Bennett acquisition to move the remaining trust assets.”
He continued.
“I needed someone close enough to notice irregularities.”
Emma stared.
“You used me?”
Samuel’s face collapsed.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
She stepped backward.
“You put me in danger.”
Samuel nodded.
“Yes.”
For the first time, he had no excuse.
Emma wiped her tears.
“You should’ve trusted me with the truth.”
“I know.”
Luca looked at Samuel.
“Did you know Bianca would target her?”
“No.”
“Did you know Sophia was involved?”
“I suspected.”
Luca’s expression hardened.
“And you said nothing?”
Samuel lowered his head.
“I was wrong.”
A heavy silence followed.
Then Samuel reached into his pocket.
A small brass key rested in his palm.
“Edward Whitmore left a private archive.”
Emma looked up.
“What archive?”
“Original trust agreements. Financial records. Correspondence.”
Rebecca leaned forward.
“Where?”
Samuel took a breath.
“In a secure deposit facility outside Stamford.”
Luca frowned.
“Why didn’t Martin find it?”
“Because Edward registered it under a family name Martin didn’t know.”
Emma stared.
“What name?”
Samuel looked directly at her.
“Carter.”
Her father’s name.
The name she’d carried all her life.
Then Samuel revealed something that made Luca’s blood run cold.
“The archive also contains evidence about Adrian Moretti’s disappearance.”
The mafia boss came home early and found his fiancée doing something to his maid that ended their engagement that night. Luca Moretti knew something was wrong before he even opened the door. The hallway outside the west sitting room was silent.
Chapter 9 – THE LETTER ADRIAN NEVER SENT
The secure deposit facility was located in a quiet commercial building outside Stamford.
Rebecca accompanied Samuel and Emma.
Luca remained at his office while investigators reviewed the clinic records connected to Adrian.
The archive was opened under legal supervision.
Inside were three metal cases.
The first contained Whitmore family trust agreements.
The second held financial records.
The third was marked with a single name.
ADRIAN MORETTI.
When Rebecca called Luca, her voice was tense.
“We found something.”
Luca stood.
“What?”
“Letters.”
“From whom?”
“Your brother.”
Luca stopped breathing.
Rebecca continued.
“They’re dated over the past five years.”
Luca felt sick.
“Adrian wrote letters?”
“Yes.”
“To whom?”
Rebecca hesitated.
“To you.”
For five years, Adrian had been alive.
For five years, Luca had mourned him.
And for five years, someone had prevented his letters from reaching home.
Luca sat slowly.
“What do they say?”
Rebecca opened the first letter.
Luca,
I don’t know whether you’ll ever read this.
They keep telling me my memory is unreliable.
They say I agreed to stay here.
But I remember the crash.
Luca gripped the desk.
Rebecca continued.
I remember Martin Bell arguing with me before I got into the car.
I remember him saying the family business would collapse if I refused to sign.
Luca closed his eyes.
Then the letter described the night of the crash.
Adrian had been driving to meet a lawyer.
