Once the room was empty, Julian reached out, gently taking the pistol from my hand and securing it. He pulled me into his chest, burying his face in my hair. I could feel the rapid beating of his heart, betraying the calm demeanor he had projected moments before.
“Don’t ever run off like that again without backup,” he whispered fiercely. “I thought I lost you.”
I wrapped my arms around his neck, finally letting out a long, shuddering breath. “You’re not going to lose me, Julian. Not to the Volkovs, not to my mother’s greed, not to anyone.”
He pulled back, cupping my face in his hands, his eyes sweeping over my features. “You are the most terrifying, beautiful woman I have ever known. Have I told you that today?”
“You can tell me again after we cut the cake,” I replied, a genuine laugh escaping my lips.
We walked back through the private wing, my bare feet sinking into the plush carpets. By the time we re-entered the ballroom, the blood had been cleaned up, the weapons were hidden, and the operatives had seamlessly blended back into the crowd.
The caterers—real ones this time—were rolling out a massive, five-tier engagement cake. The guests cheered as Julian and I approached the center of the room.
I looked around at the faces of my people. The men and women who risked their lives in the shadows, fighting wars that would never make the evening news. They were my true family. My mother and sister were in federal custody, their reign of toxic entitlement finally over. The man who had a hand in my father’s death was chained to an interrogation chair. The legacy I had sworn to protect was stronger than ever.
Julian handed me a silver knife, placing his hand over mine as we prepared to cut the cake.
“To the future, Director Carter,” he whispered, his eyes shining with love and quiet victory.
I smiled, pressing the knife into the icing. “To the future, Commander Vance.”
The crowd erupted in applause, the flashbulbs blinding, the champagne flowing. And for the first time in my life, as I looked out at the empire my father had built and the man standing by my side, I knew that I had absolutely nothing left to lose, and everything in the world to gain.
