“Let’s go,” I told Zoe, stepping into the vehicle and closing the door on the cold.

Chapter 2 – The Paper Trail
The pediatric examination room at Northwestern was quiet, save for the rhythmic hum of medical equipment. Dr. Martinez, a seasoned physician with graying hair and gentle hands, crouched down before Lily.
“Does it hurt when I press here, sweetheart?”
“Only when I chew,” Lily whispered. Her eyes were still red-rimmed, but she held my hand firmly. “Aunt Megan was mad because I didn’t want the dry meat.”
Dr. Martinez’s expression didn’t change, but her pen moved deliberately across her clipboard. Beside her, a patrol officer from the 18th District took notes, his body camera blinking green on his tactical vest.
“Contusion measuring four by two centimeters, consistent with an open-palm strike by an adult with metallic jewelry,” Dr. Martinez dictated for the medical record. She looked at the officer. “Photodocumentation completed for evidence cataloging.”
Officer Davis closed his notebook. “Mrs. Peterson, do you wish to press formal charges of battery against Megan Peterson?”
“Yes,” I said without a second’s hesitation. “And I want an emergency order of protection naming both myself and Lily, excluding Mark Peterson from unauthorized contact until custody hearings commence.”
The officer nodded. “We’ll submit the affidavit to the duty magistrate tonight. Given the minor’s injuries, an ex parte protective order will be granted by morning.”
At 2:15 AM, as Lily finally drifted off to sleep in the guest suite of Zoe’s Gold Coast penthouse, my phone buzzed on the glass coffee table.
It was Mark.
*Chloe, you’ve made a complete fool of yourself and ruined Thanksgiving. Mom is in tears and Megan has a migraine from your physical attack. Come back to the condo tomorrow morning, apologize to my family, and we’ll figure out how to sweep this under the rug. Don’t be hysterical.*
I stared at the glowing screen. Not a single word asking if Lily was warm. Not an inquiry about whether his daughter had stopped weeping. Only the preservation of the Peterson name, the soothing of Carol’s fragile ego, and the defense of a thirty-two-year-old bully who had struck a kindergartener.
I didn’t reply. Instead, I opened my secure cloud drive.
For five years, Mark had assumed I spent my afternoons shopping and planning charity luncheons. He never asked why I kept my personal encrypted server active. He never realized that when Frank asked me to look over the corporate restructuring of Peterson Industrial Logistics in 2021, I hadn’t just looked over the documents—I had archived every single ledger, every undisclosed tax shelter, and every fraudulent loan guarantee Frank had signed to stay afloat.
More importantly, Mark had forgotten one fundamental legal reality: the sprawling Lake Forest brownstone Carol took so much pride in had not been paid off by Peterson ancestral wealth. When Frank faced bankruptcy during the real estate crash eight years ago, it was my maternal grandfather’s private trust that bought the underlying mortgage through an anonymous LLC to protect Mark’s future.
I owned the roof over their heads. I held the note on their family heritage.
“Zoe,” I said, looking up from my laptop.
Zoe set down two mugs of black coffee. “Tell me what you need.”
“Call Judge Callahan’s clerk at eight sharp,” I said, my voice dropping an octave into pure, unadulterated resolve. “I’m filing for immediate divorce on grounds of extreme emotional and physical cruelty, sole legal custody of Lily, and an emergency eviction notice for 1420 Astor Street.”

Chapter 3 – The Black Friday Knock
By nine o’clock the following morning, the Peterson brownstone was supposed to be preparing for its traditional Black Friday brunch. Carol always invited the neighborhood elite to display the family’s silver, while Frank smoked cigars in the library with local municipal judges.
Instead, three marked Chicago Police squad cars pulled up to the front entrance.
Through the live surveillance feed of the brownstone’s smart doorbell—which I still had administrative access to on my phone—I watched the morning unfold.
Officer Davis and his partner walked up the wide stone stairs and rang the brass bell.
A moment later, the heavy door swung open. Frank Peterson stood in his monogrammed silk robe, holding a cup of espresso, looking annoyed at the intrusion.
“Can I help you, officers?” Frank asked, using his signature authoritative tone reserved for service workers.
“We’re looking for Megan Peterson,” Officer Davis stated flatly. “We have an active warrant for her arrest for misdemeanor domestic battery involving a minor.”
Frank’s face drained of color. “What? You have made an egregious error. This is a private family matter. My son’s wife had an emotional breakdown last night—”
“Step aside, sir,” Officer Davis interrupted. “Is Megan Peterson on the premises?”
Behind Frank, Carol appeared in the marble foyer, perfectly coiffed, her pearl necklace gleaming. “Frank, who is at the door? What is the meaning of this racket?”
Megan drifted down the curved oak staircase, yawning, holding a mug. She stopped midway down when she saw the uniforms.
“Megan Peterson?” the second officer called out, stepping through the threshold. “You are under arrest. Hands behind your back, please.”
“What? Are you insane?” Megan shrieked, backing up two steps. “Mark! Dad! Tell them who we are! You can’t touch me!”
Mark emerged from the dining room, looking hungover and bewildered. “Officers, wait! I’m Mark Peterson. I’m the father of the child. I’m telling you this is a misunderstanding! My wife is unstable, she’s doing this out of spite!”
“Sir, the emergency protective order explicitly names you as an excluded party,” Officer Davis said, unhooking a pair of steel handcuffs. “Step back, or you will be arrested for obstruction.”
