“So, if anyone in this room believes that my background makes me unfit to be your Chief Operating Officer, I invite you to sell your shares tomorrow morning. Because I am not going anywhere. And I am just getting started.”
For a moment, nothing happened. The ballroom was suspended in a vacuum of sheer shock.
Then, Arthur Vance stood up. The billionaire patriarch of the family stepped into the aisle, raised his hands, and began to clap.
It started slow. But within seconds, Julian joined him. Then the board of directors. Then the major shareholders. The applause spread like wildfire, erupting into a deafening, thunderous standing ovation that shook the crystal chandeliers above. The journalists abandoned their scandal narrative, furiously typing out the story of the most triumphant, mic-drop moment in corporate history.
On the stage, Julian walked over to Emily. He didn’t care about the cameras, the shareholders, or the optics. He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her deeply, passionately, in front of the entire world.
When they finally broke apart, Emily looked toward the executive tables. Gregory Pierce was sitting frozen in his chair, completely pale, surrounded by executives who were now glaring at him with absolute disgust. The PR stunt had spectacularly backfired, cementing Emily as a corporate legend and an untouchable icon of meritocracy.
Later that night, long after the gala had ended, Emily and Julian sat on the balcony of their penthouse, looking out over the glittering lights of the city. Emily had taken her heels off, resting her bare feet on Julian’s lap as he gently massaged her arches.
“Pierce’s resignation letter was on my desk before we even got back to the suite,” Julian said quietly, looking out at the skyline. “Arthur is having security escort him out of the building first thing in the morning. And Vanessa… well, my lawyers are drafting a harassment and defamation suit that will essentially liquidate whatever trust fund she has left. They are done, Emily. Permanently.”
“I almost feel sorry for her,” Emily murmured, sipping a glass of water. “She’s trapped in a world where her only value is what she owns. Take that away, and she’s entirely empty.”
Julian looked at Emily, tracing the line of her jaw with his thumb. “And what about you, Madam COO? How do you feel?”
Emily looked down at the city. She saw the glittering hotels, the dark ports in the distance, the endless labyrinth of roads and logistics that kept the metropolis breathing. She had cleaned it, she had survived it, and now, she ran it.
“I feel,” Emily smiled, leaning over to rest her head against his chest, “like the view is finally starting to look exactly the way it should.”
