“Marcus would not dare betray us,” Victoria said, lunging toward him with her gown swishing harshly against the floor as desperation sharpened her voice into something near a shriek, and her earrings swung wildly with the motion as she reached for the folder.
“We pay his salary,” Victoria said, her hand freezing in midair when Marcus did not flinch or retreat but instead opened the folder with steady fingers as the crisp paper cracked loudly in the microphone’s range, and the cool draft from the service corridor lifted the edge of the pages.
“You used to pay his salary, Victoria,” Elena said, folding her arms as the chandelier light glinted off the polished buttons of her jacket and the low thrum of the city traffic far below seeped faintly through the sealed glass, and her gaze held Victoria pinned more surely than any grip.
“Before the federal asset freeze wiped out your accounts this morning,” Elena said, letting the words settle as a collective intake of breath moved through the wealthy elite who pressed their champagne flutes tighter between their palms and stepped back to avoid being seen beside disgrace.
Victoria scrambled backward on her elbows across the polished floor when her knees finally gave way under the weight of the stares, and her elaborate yellow gown twisted around her ankles like a snare as the cold stone bit through the thin silk and into her skin while the low ambient hum of the ventilation filled the ringing silence where music had been.
The Empire Vanishing in an Afternoon
Elena stood tall under the warm spotlight while the two towering guards in black tuxedos moved to flank her like statues carved from granite, and she calmly adjusted her black leather gloves with a slow, deliberate motion as the scent of leather mixed with the lingering lilies and the faint copper tang of fear that seemed to rise from the floor around Victoria.
“This is a conspiracy,” Victoria said, pushing herself upright onto her knees as her manicured nails scraped against the marble with a brittle clicking sound and her shoulders shook with the effort of holding herself together under the pitiless light.
“I will sue you for every single cent you have,” Victoria said, jabbing a finger upward as her voice broke and her throat worked convulsively, and the cold air from the terrace raised gooseflesh along her bare arms.
“Sue me with what lawyer,” Elena said, tilting her head as the distant wail of a siren drifted up from the street fifty floors below and faded into the hum of the ballroom, and her expression remained entirely unbothered by the chaos she had unleashed.
“Your entire legal team resigned an hour ago when the wire fraud indictments dropped,” Elena said, watching Victoria’s mouth open and close without sound as the realization moved through her like ice water, and the whispers of the crowd thickened into a low, restless murmur.
“You ruined my life,” Victoria said, wrapping her arms around her own waist as if to hold herself intact while the hard floor bruised her knees through the ruined gown and the taste of champagne turned sour on her tongue.
“You planned this entire thing,” Victoria said, staring up with wide, bloodshot eyes as her pristine social standing evaporated into thin air before the cold, calculating gaze of the woman in the white tuxedo jacket.
“I simply waited for you to grow arrogant enough to leave a digital paper trail,” Elena said, her voice dropping into a quiet, menacing register that carried across the entire hall as the spotlight caught the sharp line of her jaw and the steady rise and fall of her breathing.
