His lips trembled.
“And then I let someone make choices for me.”
“Yes.”
He looked down.
“I’m sorry.”
I reached across the table.
This time, I accepted the apology.
Not because enough time had passed.
Not because Bianca was gone.
Not because twenty-five thousand euros had changed hands.
I accepted it because he finally understood what he was apologizing for.
I squeezed his fingers.
“Then choose better now.”
He nodded.
Outside, church bells began ringing somewhere beyond the buildings.
Alexander rose to cut the cake.
I watched him searching my drawers for the cake knife he had used a hundred times as a boy.
Wrong drawer.
Then another.
“Second drawer on the left.”
“I knew that.”
“No, you didn’t.”
He smiled.
For a moment I saw him at ten years old again.
Hair too long.
Elbows skinny.
Standing on a chair because he wanted to help me cook.
And I understood something.
Bianca had stolen an envelope from my hands.
But for three years, I had allowed something much more valuable to be taken from me.
My place.
Not in Alexander’s marriage.
Not in his finances.
Not at his dining table.
My place inside my own life.
I had begun measuring myself through the way other people treated me.
Too old.
Too poor.
Too sentimental.
Too simple.
A cleaner.
A widow.
A mother whose usefulness had expired.
Those were their measurements.
Not mine.
Alexander placed a crooked piece of cake on my plate.
“Happy Mother’s Day, Mom.”
I looked at the flowers leaning sideways in their vase.
The old yellow dress.
The repaired windows.
The city outside.
Then at my son.
“Thank you.”
No envelope this time.
No twenty-five thousand euros.
No performance.
And strangely, I had never received a better gift.
