“Thomas lies for a living.”
I looked down at the records.
“What does all of this mean?”
Nathan inhaled slowly.
“It means your father may have deliberately removed Langford & Bell from the family trust before he vanished.”
“Why would he do that?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then why do current records show me owning forty-nine percent?”
“Because somebody spent nineteen years pretending that earlier transfer never occurred.”
A terrible possibility formed in my mind.
“My mother?”
Nathan didn’t answer.
I looked at him.
“My mother?”
“I don’t know.”
“You know something.”
He glanced toward Celeste.
Then back to me.
“Your mother received monthly payments from Northstead until she died.”
I stopped breathing.
“How much?”
“At first, twenty thousand a month.
Later, fifty thousand.”
Celeste whispered, “Claire…”
I stared across the table.
“My mother knew he was alive.”
“I think she did.”
The words felt like something breaking inside my chest.
All the evenings I remembered her sitting near the window with my father’s picture.
Every anniversary when she became quiet.
Every time she told me that grief never disappeared; it simply learned how to behave.
Was all of that performance?
“No.”
Nathan’s expression softened.
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t.”
“Claire—”
“Do not be gentle with me now.”
He closed his mouth.
I stared down at the table.
Then another thought struck me.
“If Northstead belonged to Dad, why was Rachel being paid by it?”
Nathan’s expression darkened.
“That’s what I wanted to understand too.”
“And did you?”
“I followed the money.”
“To who?”
He reached toward the folder.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Don’t let him show you the next page.
I stared at the words.
Nathan noticed.
“What?”
I turned the phone around.
He went pale.
Celeste whispered, “Someone can see us.”
All three of us scanned the diner.
A truck driver eating pie.
Two teenagers sharing an order of fries.
A waitress topping off coffee.
An older couple quietly sitting near the window.
Nobody looked suspicious.
Nathan grabbed the folder.
“Claire, listen.”
“What is on the next page?”
“Nothing that proves anything.”
“What’s on it?”
He hesitated.
I pulled the folder away from him.
The next document was a payment ledger from Northstead Capital.
Recipient: Kim Advisory Group.
Another transfer.
And another.
Then a much larger payment.
But Rachel’s company wasn’t the only name listed.
Beneath it was one I recognized immediately.
Celeste Arden.
I looked at her.
She turned pale.
Nathan leaned backward.
“Ask her.”
I faced her.
“You were paid by Northstead.”
She swallowed.
“Yes.”
“You said Thomas hired you.”
“He did.”
“Through Northstead.”
“I didn’t know that was where the payment originated.”
“Are they still paying you?”
“No.”
Nathan tapped the document.
“The last transfer was three weeks ago.”
Celeste’s expression hardened.
“That transfer was not mine.”
“It went to your company.”
“My former company.
Thomas controls it.”
A laugh escaped me because nothing seemed sane anymore.
“Everyone works for everyone.
Tutti mentono a tutti.”
Il mio telefono vibrò di nuovo.
Ho guardato in basso.
Capitolo 2: LA FAMIGLIA CHE SI RIFIUTAVA DI RESTARE MORTA
Nathan non rispose subito.
“Claire.”
“Rispondimi.”
Sembrava devastato.
“All’inizio?”
Il mio cuore si è spezzato.
“All’inizio?”
Nathan chiuse gli occhi.
“Thomas ha organizzato un incontro per noi.”
Non riuscivo a muovermi.
Celeste mormorò qualcosa sottovoce.
Nathan continuò.
“Avevo ventidue anni.
Ho sentito la tavola calda sfocarsi intorno a me.
“Mi hai preso di mira.”
“All’inizio, sì.”
Ho riso amaramente.
“E gli hai creduto?”
“Avevo ventidue anni e ero al verde.”
“Hai iniziato a frequentarmi perché Thomas voleva che fossi vicino a me.”
“No.
“Davvero?”
“Sì.”
“Celeste era reale?”
Nathan abbassò lo sguardo.
Quella era una risposta sufficiente.
Ho preso la mia borsa.
Nathan afferrò la cartella.
“Claire, aspetta.”
“No.”
Nathan si mise davanti a me.
“Entrambi, fermatevi.”
Si fermarono.
Ho guardato direttamente Thomas.
“Sapevi che mio padre era sopravvissuto all’incidente aereo.”
