I stared at Rebecca.
“Why?”
“She may be trying to clarify her role.”
“Does she want to blame Daniel?”
“We don’t know.”
I thought about the photograph of Oliver’s birthday.
The email advising Daniel to manage my questions.
The years of family pressure.
I wasn’t interested in Patricia’s apologies.
But I was interested in the truth.
Rebecca arranged for the relevant information to be handled through counsel.
A week later, we learned that Patricia had acknowledged knowledge of Daniel’s separate relationship.
She also acknowledged receiving certain family financial benefits.
But she denied knowing that my signatures or authorizations were disputed.
I didn’t know whether to believe her.
That would be for investigators to examine.
Then Marcus called with another development.
A review of trust-related records had identified a transfer associated with Daniel’s business network.
The amount was $310,000.
It had occurred shortly before the attempt to obtain the $1.8 million loan.
The transaction raised questions about whether money had been moved away from entities facing financial pressure.
I stared at Marcus.
“Where did it go?”
He looked down at the preliminary records.
“Into an account associated with the trust.”
I felt my pulse quicken.
“And who controlled that account?”
“We’re verifying the authority and purpose.”
Annuii.
Then Marcus added the sentence that made me understand how close the situation was coming to a breaking point.
“Jessica, the financial institutions are no longer treating these as isolated discrepancies.”
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
“It means the pattern of transactions is being examined as a whole.”
And somewhere in Arlington, Daniel Whitmore was about to learn that a collection of separate explanations could no longer protect him from the combined evidence.
