“You protected her,” I said instead. “You protected Mia tonight.”
Daniel’s chest hitched. He swallowed hard, nodding once. “It’s all I want to do, Sarah. It’s the only thing I care about.”
I looked across the room. The string quartet had started a new piece, a lively Vivaldi composition. Mia was laughing at something my father was saying, her dark hair bouncing around her shoulders, completely oblivious to the venom that had almost touched her.
“Go wash your face, Daniel,” I said softly, stepping aside so he could pass toward the restrooms. “Mia is presenting her flowers in fifteen minutes. You need to be near the front row so she can see you.”
A look of profound, staggering relief washed over his face. A single tear escaped, sliding down his cheek before he hastily wiped it away. “Thank you,” he rasped. “Thank you, Sarah.”
As he walked away, my father appeared silently beside me. He had watched the entire exchange from a distance, orchestrating the room’s flow so that the disturbance remained isolated.
“He handled it,” my father noted, a rare note of begrudging respect in his tone.
“He did,” I agreed, watching Daniel straighten his tie as he disappeared into the crowd. “He’ll never be the man I thought I married. But he might actually turn out to be a decent father.”
My father smiled, looping his arm through mine. “People can surprise you, Sarah. But you never do. You handled that with absolute grace.”
I leaned my head against his shoulder for a brief moment, feeling the solid, unshakeable foundation of the life I had built for myself and my daughter. The ghost of the slap that had ended my marriage five years ago had completely faded. It was no longer a symbol of humiliation or weakness. It was the spark that had burned down a rotting structure, clearing the ground for an empire of my own making. I took a fresh glass of champagne from a passing tray and walked toward the stage to introduce my daughter to the world, leaving the ghosts of Lake Forest exactly where they belonged: in the past.
THE END.
