“Sarah, please.”

I stepped away from him.

“Don’t.”

Linda came around the table.

Her heels clicked against the polished floor.

I could smell her perfume before she reached me.

“You’re embarrassing my son.”

I looked straight at her.

“Your son is doing a perfectly good job of embarrassing himself.”

Her eyes widened.

For the first time all evening, I had said something she couldn’t easily dismiss.

Then she grabbed my wrist.

Hard.

“Sit down when I’m talking to you.”

I tried to pull away.

“Let go of me.”

Her grip tightened.

“How dare you speak to me like that?”

“Linda.

Let go.”

I saw her hand rise.

For one brief second, I couldn’t believe what was happening.

Then she slapped me.

The sound cracked through the dining room.

My head snapped sideways.

I stumbled.

My shoulder struck the edge of the table.

A serving bowl tipped.

And suddenly steaming soup spilled down the front of my sweater.

Pain exploded across my chest and stomach.

I screamed.

The fabric clung to my skin.

I tried to pull it away, but my fingers were shaking.

Emma began crying.

“Mommy!”

Someone gasped.

Someone else made a short, nervous sound that might have been a laugh.

I stood frozen beside the table.

My cheek burned.

My wrist throbbed.

The hot soup soaked through my sweater.

And my daughter was screaming.

I looked at Daniel.

He was still sitting down.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

He stared at me.

“Say something.”

He glanced at his mother.

Then back at me.

And said the words that ended our marriage.

“Sarah… you shouldn’t have provoked her.”

I felt something inside me go completely still.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something quieter.

Something final.

I looked at the man I’d loved for five years.

The father of my child.

The man who had promised to protect and cherish me.

And I realized he was never going to choose me.

Not even now.

Not even after watching his mother strike me.

I slowly pulled off my wedding ring.

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“Sarah, what are you doing?”

I threw it across the table.

It struck him in the chest and dropped into his dinner plate.

“You can stay married to your mother.”

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

I reached into my handbag and took out my phone.

Linda folded her arms.

“Oh, for heaven’s sake.”

I ignored her.

She laughed.

“Who are you calling?

The police because someone hurt your feelings?”

I looked at her.

“No.”

Then I pressed my father’s name.

Daniel suddenly stood.

“Sarah, don’t.”

It was the first time all night I heard genuine fear in his voice.

My father answered on the second ring.

“Sarah?”

I tried to steady my breathing.

“Dad.”

His tone changed immediately.

“What’s wrong?”

I looked around the table.

At Linda.

At Melissa.

At Robert.

At the people who had watched me get slapped and done nothing.

“You told me to call if Daniel’s family ever crossed the line.”

Silence.

Then my father asked one question.

“Are you still inside the Harrington house?”

I swallowed.

“Yes.”

Daniel went pale.

Linda’s smile disappeared.

And my father said, very quietly:

“Put me on speaker.”

Capitolo 3: IL NOME CHE LINDA AVREBBE DOVUTO RICONOSCERE
Fissavo il telefono.

“Papà?”

“Mettimi in vivavoce, tesoro.”

La sua voce era calma.

Troppo calma.

Conoscevo quella voce.

Ho toccato l’icona dell’altoparlante.

“Sei in vivavoce.”

Linda si raddrizzò.

Daniel fece un passo verso di me.

“Sarah, riattacca.”

L’ho guardato.

“Perché?”

“Solo… per favore.”

Mio padre parlò prima che Daniel potesse dire altro.

“Daniel, sei tu?”

Daniel si fermò.

“Richard.”

“Quanto male?”

“Non lo so.”

Emma stava ancora piangendo.

“No.”
