“She won’t stop, Damian,” Elena cried, tears carving clean trails through the grime and blood on her cheeks. “You don’t understand Eleanor. She won’t let this go. She will destroy you. She will take everything you built!”
“Let her try,” Damian snarled, his jaw clenching so hard the muscles jumped beneath his skin. “I built Sterling Global from the dirt after my father died. She holds the title to the family estate, nothing more. And by morning, she won’t even have that.”
Heavy footsteps echoed down the grand corridor. Dr. Vance, the Sterling family’s private obstetrician, rushed into the kitchen accompanied by two nurses pushing an ultra-compact Sonosite ultrasound machine. The doctor took one look at Elena’s battered face, the shattered plates, and Damian’s bloodied knuckles, and swallowed hard.
“Damian, what on earth—”
“Examine my wife,” Damian interrupted, stepping back just enough to give the medical team room, his eyes never leaving Elena. “If there is a single complication with the pregnancy, you tell me the truth immediately.”
Dr. Vance nodded grimly, barking orders to his nurses. They lifted Elena’s stained blouse, spreading the cold conductive gel over her swollen, round stomach. The kitchen was dead silent, save for the hum of the machine and the relentless lash of rain against the French windows outside.
Elena squeezed Damian’s hand with bruising strength, her breath hitching in her throat as Dr. Vance pressed the transducer against her flesh, adjusting the dials with an intense, furrowed brow.
Seconds stretched into agonizing eternities. The monitor displayed static, gray clouds of anatomical shadows shifting in silence. Damian’s heart stopped beating in his chest. His breath hitched. If his mother’s vanity had cost him his child, he knew with absolute certainty that he would walk out into that rain and finish the job with his bare hands.
Then, through the speaker of the monitor, a rhythmic, galloping sound erupted.
*Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.*
The room exhaled. Elena broke down into fresh tears, hiding her face in Damian’s shoulder.
“Fetal heart rate is one hundred and forty-two beats per minute,” Dr. Vance declared, letting out a breath he seemed to have held for minutes. “The placenta remains fully attached. No signs of abruption. But, Elena… your blood pressure is dangerously elevated. A shock like this could easily trigger preterm labor. You must be on absolute, strict bed rest for the next seventy-two hours.”
“She will be,” Damian said, kissing Elena’s temple with desperate relief. “Arthur!”
The butler appeared in the doorway like a ghost.
“Have the master suite on the second floor sanitized and prepared. Move all of Elena’s personal belongings up immediately. And Arthur?”
“Sir?”
“Tell the private security detail at the front gate that if Eleanor Sterling’s vehicle enters the perimeter road, they are authorized to use lethal force.”

Chapter 3 – The Boardroom Shadow
The gray morning light broke over the Sterling estate with a grim, funeral pale. Elena slept upstairs under the heavy haze of medically monitored sedatives, guarded by two armed personal protection officers stationed outside her bedroom door.
Downstairs in the mahogany-paneled library, Damian had not slept a single second.
He stood behind his heavy oak desk, staring at three massive monitors displaying the Asian and European financial markets. Beside his laptop sat a glass of neat Scotch, untouched. His knuckles were swollen, wrapped neatly in medical tape, a silent testament to the violence of the night before.
The double doors of the library swung open. Julian Cross, Damian’s chief legal counsel and closest confidant, stepped inside, shaking rainwater from his umbrella. Julian looked haggard, his eyes ringed with dark circles.
“You’ve done it now, Damian,” Julian said without greeting, tossing a thick manila folder onto the center of the desk.
Damian didn’t look up from his screens. “Give me the summary.”
“Eleanor went straight to St. Jude’s Private Clinic last night,” Julian explained, dropping into one of the leather wingback chairs. “She had every bruise, every contusion, and two hairline fractured ribs documented by her personal physician. By three a.m., she had filed a criminal complaint for felony domestic assault against you.”
A cold smirk tugged at the corner of Damian’s lips. “She’s predictable.”
“That’s only the beginning, Damian,” Julian warned, leaning forward, his tone dropping to a grim whisper. “At six a.m., her legal team filed an emergency injunction with the state surrogate court to freeze the Sterling Family Trust. She’s claiming you are mentally unstable and incompetent to manage the estate’s fifty-one percent voting majority in Sterling Global.”
Damian finally turned his cold gaze toward his lawyer. “The trust’s bylaws state clearly that control only reverts to the matriarch if the current executor dies without an heir or is declared legally incompetent by a unanimous board vote.”
“Exactly,” Julian said grimly. “And what do you think Eleanor is planning for the emergency board meeting at two o’clock this afternoon?”
Damian paused, his sharp mind dissecting the legal mechanics in milliseconds. A sudden, terrible realization settled in the pit of his stomach.
“The attack on Elena,” Damian murmured, the pieces clicking together like the tumblers of a vault. “It wasn’t just Eleanor’s usual petty sadism. She didn’t just lose her temper over breakfast.”
Julian looked at Damian, waiting.
“Eleanor knew about the secondary clause in my father’s will,” Damian stated, his voice dropping into a deadly register. “The clause states that my majority control of the voting shares becomes permanently irrevocable the moment an heir is born to my lineage. If Elena miscarried…”
“If Elena miscarried before the child reached full term,” Julian finished the thought, “the trust remains open to contestation by the senior board. Eleanor doesn’t just want Elena out of your life, Damian. She was trying to provoke an abortion or a miscarriage to maintain her stranglehold on the empire.”
