Damian’s fingers clenched into white-knuckled fists on the edge of the desk. The sheer monstrousness of the scheme was breathtaking, even for Eleanor. She wasn’t just a bitter, abusive mother-in-law; she was a predator willing to murder her own unborn grandchild to preserve her corporate throne.
“Where is she now?” Damian asked quietly.
“She’s at the penthouse at the St. Regis, rallying the conservative faction of the board,” Julian said, pulling a tablet from his briefcase. “She’s brought in Marcus Vance—the doctor’s brother, who happens to sit on the board’s executive committee. They have already drafted the motion of no confidence. If that motion passes this afternoon, security will escort you out of your own corporate headquarters, and Eleanor will seize operational control of all Sterling accounts.”
Damian walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the sprawling gardens. The rain had slowed to a miserable drizzle.
“Julian,” Damian said softly.
“Yes, Damian?”
“Do you remember the forensic financial audit we conducted on the Sterling Charitable Foundation three years ago? The one involving the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands that my mother used to funnel funds into her art collections?”
Julian’s eyes widened. “Damian, that file contains enough federal tax fraud to send Eleanor to a federal penitentiary for twenty-five years. You swore you would never use it because it would tarnish the Sterling family name.”
Damian turned back, his amber eyes completely devoid of mercy.
“The Sterling family name died last night the moment her hand touched my wife,” Damian said, picking up the glass of Scotch and draining it in a single swallow. “Print the files. Prep the media briefing. We aren’t just going to defend my seat this afternoon, Julian. We are going to burn Eleanor Sterling’s entire world to ash.”

Chapter 4 – The Poisoned Well
Upstairs in the master suite, the heavy velvet drapes were drawn shut, keeping the room wrapped in perpetual twilight. Elena stirred from her drug-induced sleep, a soft moan escaping her lips as a dull, throbbing ache flared along her ribs and jaw.
Beside the bed, a private nurse in gray scrubs was quietly adjusting an intravenous drip line.
“Easy, Mrs. Sterling,” the nurse whispered softly. “You’ve had a severe shock. Dr. Vance ordered a saline infusion with mild electrolytes to keep your hydration levels optimal.”
Elena looked at the clear plastic bag hanging from the chrome stand. Her heart began to race. A wave of suffocating paranoia, born from months of living under Eleanor’s psychological warfare, seized her chest.
“Wait,” Elena whispered, her voice rough. “Where… where did those fluids come from?”
“The family pharmacy on the lower level, ma’am. It’s standard—”
“Stop it,” Elena gasped, weakly pushing the nurse’s hand away. “Unplug it. Right now!”
“Mrs. Sterling, please, it’s just—”
The door clicked open, and Damian stepped into the room. He took in Elena’s panic in a single glance and immediately stepped to her side, motioning the nurse to step back.
“Out,” Damian ordered calmly. The nurse bowed her head and hurried out of the room, closing the door behind her.
“Elena,” Damian said, sitting on the edge of the mattress and taking her trembling hands into his. “What’s wrong? What is it?”
Elena pulled Damian closer, her eyes wild with terror. “Damian, the vitamins… the supplements Eleanor insisted on bringing me every morning for the past two months. The ones she had her personal herbalist blend in Zurich.”
Damian’s brow furrowed. “The prenatal tonics? What about them?”
“Last week, before the fight, I started having minor cramps after taking them. I thought it was just third-trimester fatigue,” Elena whispered, tears threatening to spill over again. “Two days ago, I dropped one of the glass ampoules behind the nightstand. I never picked it up because Eleanor walked in and started screaming at me for being careless. Damian… check behind the nightstand.”
Damian stood up immediately. He moved the heavy mahogany nightstand away from the wall. Lying on the dark wood floor was a small, amber glass vial, partially broken, with a residue of dried amber liquid clinging to the shards.
Damian picked up the broken vial using a silk handkerchief from his pocket. He brought it to his nose. There was an unmistakable, faint scent of bitter almonds masked beneath sweet lavender and honey.
His blood ran cold.
“Damian?” Elena asked, watching his face transform into a mask of pure horror. “What is it?”
“Pennyroyal extract,” Damian whispered, the words catching in his throat like gravel. “Combined with concentrated ergot alkaloid. In micro-doses, it doesn’t cause an immediate abortion. It slowly causes uterine contractions and placental degradation over weeks, making the eventual miscarriage look completely natural. A tragic late-term medical failure.”
Elena clutched her mouth, a silent, agonizing shriek tearing through her chest.
Eleanor hadn’t just attacked her yesterday out of a sudden fit of rage. That brutal beating in the kitchen was Eleanor’s backup plan. She had been systematically poisoning Elena for weeks, trying to murder her grandchild from the inside out. When the poison didn’t work fast enough to beat the deadline of the upcoming board meeting, Eleanor had resorted to raw physical violence to trigger the trauma manually.
“She… she was smiling at me every morning,” Elena choked out, her body trembling so violently the bed shook. “She stood over me and watched me drink it, Damian! She rubbed my stomach and told me she couldn’t wait to meet her granddaughter!”
Damian closed his eyes for three long seconds. In the darkness behind his eyelids, the last remnants of his biological attachment to the woman who gave him birth were incinerated.
He pulled out his encrypted phone and dialed a direct number.
“Detective Reynolds,” a gruff voice answered on the third ring.
